Bing Replaces Yahoo! as Number Two Search Engine
Microsoft Bing reached a major milestone for usage in August, the same month it officially became the technology which powers the Yahoo! search engine. According to PC Magazine, the latest statistics from The Nielsen Company show that Bing surpassed Yahoo! for the first time in August to become the second most-used search engine in the United States.
Are Google Instant Changes Impacting Demand Media?
Google Instant has also brought with it some apparent changes to the search engine algorithm used by the company. Fortune magazine editor Dan Primack has an interesting -- if completely unsubstantiated-- theory about what is happening. Primack told PC World that the algorithm changes might have been triggered by Google to drive traffic away from online content publisher Demand Media.

Wall defacements and banners festooned above sidewalks are common constituents of the urban landscape in Pakistan. Last month, the reported instructions by President Asif Ali Zardari, asking the Ministry of Information Technology (MolT) to draft a proposal for a ban on the import of used computers and its accessories, instigated new roadside adornments, denouncing the ban.

Last month, the reported instructions by President Asif Ali Zardari, asking the Ministry of Information Technology (MolT) to draft a proposal for a ban on the import of used computers and its accessories, instigated new roadside adornments, denouncing the ban.Purporting lack of awareness among masses, multinational chip manufacturers and computer vendors are all for the ban, claiming that Pakistan has become a dumping ground for energy-inefficient, and first-world cast-offs. Despite the decline in the price of new computers, the country consumes over 500,000 second-hand PCs every year. Those against the ban argue that it is an unfair attempt by multinational hardware vendors to dominate the market, DV eliminating other more affordable options available to the consumers.
The ban would also affected by thousands of traders associated with the import and sales of used computers.
In these times of high inflation, it is imperative to consider the disposable income of the common man. Restricting the access of affordable and cheaper alternatives to those who cannot afford new computers and face heightened economic barriers to benefit from IT, will only end up costing us more as a nation. Wouldn't it be more beneficial for us to focus efforts on drafting recycling policies and defining usability standards for the electronic equipment being imported, rather than proposing an all-out ban?

More tham 75% ofnet users see internet as a right
A survey carried out by the BBC indicated that more than three-quarters of the world's population believe that access to internet is a fundamental right. The poll, which questioned more than 27,000 adults across 26 countries, suggested strong global support for access to the Web. The findings were a direct result of efforts being taken across the world to increase Net access, with the United Nations leading a push for more online. For instance, countries like Finland and Estonia have already ruled that internet access is a human right, confirmed the BBC. According to the survey, Mexico, Brazil and Turkey were among countries where support was highest. South Korea, where nearly all citizens enjoy high-speed Net access, had the greatest majority of people - 96 per cent - who believed that access to the internet was a fundamental right.

Despite inching towards a saturation stage, the telecom sector received 1.438 billion US dollars in the year 2008 and 815 million US dollars in 2009 as FDI, in different projects in the ministry and its attached departments. In addition, the total internet users of the country rose to 19 million and total direct and indirect jobs in the telecom sector increased to 1.36 million.

He further added that the 50-million figure doesn't include messages from accounts identified as spam.

Since 2008, YouTube users have been able to manually add captions to videos, while in 2009, the website began offering machine-generated captions for about a dozen partner channels.

Websites On Children Rights Lounched
The Child Rights Legal Centre has set up a website to provide information about matters relating to child rights in Pakistan. Dawn reported that the website Pakistan.childrightsdesk.com was structured along the lines of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) monitoring framework, and will help government institutions and civil society organizations monitor the compliance of CRC within the country. It was also highlighted that the current legislative framework, which regulates child rights domestically, is outdated, lacks crucial details and does not fully incorporate international standards for the protection of children.
Although not all of the millions of e-mails sent and received everyday can be checked, authorities are, nonetheless, working towards making cyber monitoring a permanent feature of their operations. Relevant divisions of at least three security agencies have received instructions to monitor all forms of 'text' that could lead them to a terrorist source.
Previously these departments had been monitoring Pakistan's internet traffic and now, they have further intensified their Web watch by gathering useful information not only about domestic residents, but also about overseas Pakistanis.

Mobile phone subscriptions to top 5 billion
Mobile phone subscriptions globally are likely to buck the economic crisis and top five billion in 2010, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) annual report on developments in the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector.
The report stated that by the end of 2009, there were 4.6 billion mobile subscriptions globally, with a penetration rate of 67 per cent. In developing countries, the penetration rate reached 57 per cent, more than double its 2005 level of 23 per cent. In developed countries, it averaged more than 100 per cent - more than one subscription per head.
"Demand for mobile telephony is fairly resilient with consumers willing to spend their disposable income on mobile services even at times of financial constraints," statistician Esperanza Magpantay said at a news briefing at the launch of the ITU's 2010 report on Measuring the Information Society.

Over the Christmas holidays, a thief broke into the Davidson County Election Office in Nashville, TN and stole computers containing personal information on all registered voters. Social Security numbers of all registered voters were on the stolen computer’s hard drives.
The Election Commission says it will formally notify the public by mail that their full Social Security numbers may be available to outside parties and is asking voters monitor their financial and personal accounts for any suspicious activity.
The Elections Commission didn’t say if the information was encrypted as is often done on laptops.
If you’re a registered voter in Nashville or Davidson County, start watching your credit very closely. Identity thieves sell this type of information up to 30 times. Chances are the thieves targeted this office purposely to get information to sell on the black market. with approximately 350,000 numbers stolen $5 a pop for each social security number, that’s $1,750,000. Multiply that by 30, and you get over 52 million dollars. A big payday for the thieves.

Dear friends at thinkgeek.com,
I recently acquired the "Annoy-A-Tron" from your web site. Actually, I acquired two, thinking that perhaps two devices might be necessary to truly splinter the minds of my friends and co-workers. How woefully did I underestimate this powerful tool.
I have watched this simple device transform an (until-now) mild-mannered colleague into a spitting, cussing, paranoid lunatic.
He has ordered all of the staff he supervises (not a small number) to locate the source of the dread beeping before doing anything else (but since they are in on the prank, they haven't been much help). So he waits, white-knuckles gripping the edge of his desk, anticipating the next beep.
He has set a timer on his computer to track the duration between beeps. It hasn't been much help.
My favorite quote so far, nearly bursting that vein on his temple as he shouted it: "That beep has been F***ING with me for HOURS now."
He has called the facilities department to schedule a maintenance worker to investigate.
He speculates that "they" might be doing air-quality testing in the building. This beep must be some device in the ducts detecting dangerous levels of asbestos in the air. Or worse. Radon? Aerosolized mercury? Legionella spores?
The beep means something. What does the beep mean? Is it a warning? It sounds urgent, doesn't it? It's telling us to do something. But what? Replace a battery? Call the authorities? Evacuate the premises? Scrub ourselves with disinfectant and put on haz-mat suits and call our families to give them our tearful goodbyes?
I imagine that soon he will begin to take things apart. He will methodically dismantle all of the electrical devices in his office, creating an unusually precise metaphor for what is happening in his psyche.
I am reminded what a thin and fragile thread keeps us attached to sanity. Today, this tiny little device helped me break a co-worker's mind, and I thank you for the sinfully pleasurable schadenfreude.
