Sound Cards Protection Guide

Common Problems Sound Card not Working - Troubleshooting Steps

If you have a doubt regarding the proper functioning of the sound card, you need to check the obvious reasons for finding out if the actual problem is with the sound card or any other component. Check the speaker connections to the computer and the cable connections. Also check whether the volume of the computer is muted or low. If necessary, remove all the sound connections and put them back again in their respective places. If this does not work, you need to move on to the sound settings in the computer operating system.

In case you have Windows XP operating system installed on your machine, you need to access the device manager. This can be done through the link: Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager. In the window, find the 'Sound and Video Game Controllers' option and expand it. If you see a yellow exclamation mark on the option which relates to the computer's audio, the sound card has some issue. Suppose the sound card is not integrated and is installed as a separate chip in the card slot, and you see an issue with it in the device manager window; open the CPU cabinet and make sure it is properly set in.

If even doing this does not solve the problem of sound card not working, you have to uninstall and reinstall the sound drivers. For doing so, in the device manager; right click on the sound device and click 'Uninstall'. Reboot the system and reinstall the drivers from the CD which came along with the sound card. If you do not have a CD, simply visit the sound card manufacturer's website and download it. Along with reinstalling the driver, you may even consider upgrading it. There are many times when this step makes the sound card functional.
